These days, it seems like there's a diet for everyone, and low fat low carb diets are the newest craze. But is it right for you?

Fat is one of the primary bugaboos when it comes to weigh loss, no doubt about it, and probably the vast majority of Americans could stand to cut their fat consumption by 70% or more. But a low fat low carb diet isn't just about cutting fat. It also claims that you should cut out carbs, carbohydrates, which will miraculously cause you to lose weight without having to cut your portions and without having to spend any time exercising.

Weight loss programs that operate on this principle simply do not work, for a very obvious reason; they don't target the real root of the problem. Fat is definitely a problem, and it should be cut from the American diet as much as possible, not as a diet, but as a complete lifestyle change. But with a low fat low carb diet, you're not changing your lifestyle; you're cutting out carbs until you reach the weight you want (if you stick with it), then incorporating them in your food intake again.

Cutting carbs from your diet won't miraculously melt away the pounds. And it makes you extremely susceptible to the yo-yo effect, because any weight you do lose will probably come back as soon as you go off the diet.

Instead of cutting out carbs in an effort to melt away pounds "the easy way," if you're really serious about weight loss, you should consider an all-over diet change and incorporate more exercise into your life. Focus on eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, certainly, but not to the complete exclusion of any one food group. Even chocolate cake is permissible if you eat it in small quantities, once a day, and get plenty of exercise. When you're living right, nothing is off limits. But a low fat low carb diet simply isn't going to do that for you.
